Daughters of India, Art and Identity
April 6, 2004
Daughters of India
focuses on the individual stories of seventeen different Indian women chosen from communities drawn from the entire breadth of India. All of these women are in some way or another artists who decorate their homes with 'painted prayers.' Huyler has deliberately chosen aspects of the lives of diverse Indian women that collectively will give a portrait of the broad range of characteristics that define Indian womanhood.
Stephen's book:
Painted Prayers
was so popular that it sold out rapidly. Stephen has literally received thousands of requests for copies and, unfortunately, it has not been possible to have this book reissued. Consequently, Stephen decided to write this book approaching the same subject from a new direction. It complements his ongoing work celebrating the identity and empowerment of Indian women.
Daughters of India
has yet to be submitted for publication, but it is hoped that it will be published to coincide with Stephen's new books and film on Sonabai, a village artist from Chhatisgarh.

July 28, 2005
In early 2004, Stephen and noted filmmaker David Wright traveled to India to chronicle the life and artistic legacy of an amazing elderly matriarch,
Sonabai
. Stephen is currently working on a number of projects which spotlight her mastery of mud bas relief sculpting, including 2 books, multiple exhibitions, a film documentary, and a multimedia DVD. Currently, there is an exhibition proposal for "Enforced Isolation" available to interested museums/galleries. Please
